Dan Mihaltianu Plaques Tournantes

The balance between centrifugal and centripetal forces can be regarded as the engine of development and evolution of social and cultural life since the beginning of civilization.

The title, Plaque Tournantes, is French for turning points, and symbolically encompasses the Plate Tecton- ics Theory, turning points of history and turntable technology, making an analogy between the continuous movement of the continental plates and the permanent social and technological changes in society.

The project looks into the circulation of music, vinyl culture, fashion and life style models across continents in the post WW2 era, a phenomenon that could potentially influence cultural, political and social changes.

Confrontation between the way of living of the young generation and the ossified political structures generates social movements. Among the most notable events: anti-Vietnam war movement, the student’s protests of 1968, the anticommunist movements in Eastern Europe culminating with the 1989 revolts, the anti-totalitarian, national or ethnical conflicts in Ex-Yugoslavia, Albania, Chechnya, Ukraine, Georgia and other regions after the collapse of Communism, and the process continues world wide.

Plaques Tournantes combines various media and techniques such as sound, video projections, vinyl records, historical sound equipment, documents and prints. Different stages of the project were shown in several personal and group exhibitions: Labor Berlin 1, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Bayer Kultur, Leverkusen, 2010; Berliner Zimmer, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art Thessaloniki, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, 2011.

The edition produced in cooperation with Trykkeriet – Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Bergen, Norway is a four meter long intaglio print combining vinyl records and photogravure as a timeline (or, score) for music and social movements.
