Join us at Trykkeriet for an exciting exploration of lithography with Milton Mondal!

Get ready to embark on an exhilarating artistic adventure as we dive into the captivating lithography course with  Milton Mondal. Derived from the Greek words ‘lithos’ (stone) and ‘grapho’ (to write), lithography isn’t just a printmaking technique—it’s a journey through time, dating back to the late 18th century.

In this workshop, we will go through the traditional ways of using oil-based crayons or inks and experimenting with them. Under the guidance, you’ll discover how to create stunning lithographic prints using simple tools and a whole lot of imagination. Mondal will walk you through the process step by step, demystifying the process and empowering you to unleash your creativity.

But there’s more to this workshop than just technique. Mondal will also share insights from his artistic journey, revealing how other artists combine various printing techniques to create captivating works of art. Through this journey, you will explore the connections between traditional printmaking and the broader artistic landscape.

This workshop will be conducted in English.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to explore lithography at Foreningen Trykkeriet with Milton Mondal. Whether you’re a printmaker or a curious beginner, this workshop promises to ignite your creativity and expand your artistic horizons.”

See you there!

Katazome Workshop & Pop up exhibition

Instructor: Masao Kusakabe

Location: Fjøsangerveien 70A

Time: 03.03.— 10.03.24, 13:00— 16:00

Price: 3000 / 2400 (VISP Members)

What is stencil dyeing (Katazome)?

Katazome is a traditional Japanese technique that is the basis of silkscreen. The biggest feature is that you can make patterns by cutting out water-resistant paper. And unlike silk screens and stencils, it is resist dyed. For stencil dyeing, resist dyeing paste is applied to the cut out areas of the paper pattern, and after it dries, the parts that are not coated with resist dyeing paste are colored. The negative and positive shapes created by stencil dyeing are reversed compared to silkscreens and stencils.

Beginning with a contextual introduction, participants will learn the basic principles and methodologies of stencil printing, through drawing and cutting, to key printing and dyeing methods, of simple design ideas.

Testing work will lead to a self-created piece to be presented in a group exhibition at Trykkeriet from March 16th – 20th.

Schedule
(The workshop time is the minimum amount of time. We may use more time.)

March 3rd (Sunday) 13:00-16:00

1. KATAZOME lecture (explaining stencil dyeing techniques etc. using PC images)

2. Viewing materials (displaying actual patterns and tools)

3. Pattern distribution (thinking about the design) ⇒ Dissolution

On the first day, Kusakabe will use KATAGAMI to give a lecture on the basics of pattern design and resist dyeing.

Starting from the basics, participants will spend two days a week creating and exhibiting works that suit their individual expressions.

March 9th (Saturday) 13:00-16:00

Glue placement ⇒ Drying ⇒ Ground placement ⇒ Drying

(The production procedure will change depending on each participant’s expression.)

March 10th (Sunday) 10:00-16:00

Coloring ⇒ Heat drying ⇒ Washing ⇒ Drying/Complete ⇒ Display

(Because it takes time for the work to dry, we set a longer work time on the last day.)

Prepared items

Design knife

Cutter mat A4 or larger

Hair dryer (bring your own!)

Table (space of A2 or more for each participant)

A sink or a large resin vat (for washing patterns and works)

Pigment/Binder (water-based/heat-dry fixation) Try the ones available at Trykkeriet.

TRACING (FAMILY PORTRAIT COURSE!)

Instructor: Asbjørn Hollerud

Location: Fjøsangerveien 70A

Time: 14.10., 12:00— 16:00

Price: FREE!

This course is for children aged 10 years and up!

The course begins with children and parents drawing portraits of each other on plexiglass sheets. The process takes place by holding up the plexi plates directly in front of the face while the other half draws. Each drawing takes between 15-20 minutes before they change. After both have finished drawing, we then go on to scratch the plates using the drypoint technique.

The printing depends on how deep you scratched into the plexi glass. Areas that are to be printed light gray are scratched very faintly, while the areas that are to be black must be scratched deep into the plexiglass.

After the drawing, we will move on to the actual printing, which takes place on an etching press. The printing process starts with inking up the printing plate. The next step is to use a textile (tarlatan) to help the printing ink to get down into the depth of the plate. Finally, the plate needs to be lightly wiped with newspaper print, before it is then ready to be printed on fine cotton printing paper.

The course is made possible with financial support from the Municipality of Bergen.

Course in Mokuhanga (Japanese woodcut)

Instructor: Miyuki Kitamura / Shoichi Kitamura. Assistants Asbjørn Hollerud & Hedvig Thorkildsen

Location: Fjøsangerveien 70A

Time: 01.05.— 05.05.23, 11:00— 15:00

Price: 5800 kr (Non - VISP members) / 4900 kr (VISP members)

( TWO SPOTS AVAILABLE! )

We are very pleased to offer a 5 day course in the Mokuhanga technique with master carver Shoichi Kitamura & mokuhanga artist Miyuki Kitamura. In the course you will learn about transfer of image to the plate, carving, registration, inking and printing.

Mokuhanga is quite different from how we are used to work with oil based woodcut in the western tradition. In Mokuhanga, water based inks provide a wide range of vivid colors, and transparency. This makes it possible to create a natural fading of colors, and by doing so offering a different sense of depth. The inking process is also applied with a brush, while in the western style woodblock it is typically done with a brayer.

Another beautiful aspect of Mokuhanga is that you don´t need a printing machine. It can be done anywhere as long as you have the materials, tools and a table.

The printing is done by your own hand pressure using the flat barren tool. This also gives a wide range of possibility as you can then vary the pressure for different parts of your motif.

Introduction to silkscreen

Instructor: Dino Dikic

Location: Fjøsangerveien 70A (2nd floor)

Time: 21.05., 12:00— 16:00

Price: 1800

The course covers the introductory areas to the silkscreen technique, with an emphasis on the technical aspects. Our main focus will primarily focus on the motif and the printing process. There will be a demonstration of the exposing of silkscreen frames.

The course participants will learn a simple way of color separation by using two motifs and two colors. The silkscreen technique makes it possible to use both drawings, paintings and photographic expressions in a combination with text and other graphical elements.

The printing method first appeared in China & Japan around the late 900 AD, and has later been used frequently for producing advertisement banners and propaganda in the US from the early 19th century. Visual artists gradually started using the technique from the 1930´s. The medium is primarily often linked to the growth of the pop art in the US and in Europe from the late 1950´s and also for the political art in Norway during the 1970´s with the Gras artist group among others.
