Color viscosity workshop

Instructor: Jan Pettersson

Location: Fjøsangerveien 70A

Time: 09.11.— 13.11.26, 09:00— 16:00

Price: 3500

This course is an introduction course in intaglio printmaking concerning the concept of color using the color viscosity process, the understanding of color within this media and the 3 dimensional print.

The Viscosity Method : This technique allows for the printing of multiple colors in a single pass through an etching press. By utilizing a combination of hard and soft rollers and carefully controlling the “viscosity” of the inks, the process creates delicate and vivid multi-colored layers from a single sculptural plate.

You will learn the following: How to create a sculptural plate in relief, how to print the plate, how to mix ink, how to use different types of viscosity in relevance to printing with 2-4 colors juxtaposed/superimposed in 1 plate using a combination of intaglio & 2-4 rollers

For whom: Anyone with love for color intaglio printmaking

Prior knowledge: None
Number of places: 12

Language: Swedish, English
Workshop ethic: Active presence of participants

Week schedule:

Every day 09.00-16.00, rest of the day/evening individual work

Monday 09.00- 10.00 coffee/tea tour of Trykkeriet

Make sure you bring lunch every day during the workshop:

10.00 -11.30 Talk on color viscosity, we look at prints & plates made for the process, what is the difference between a color viscosity print & a regular print made with 2-6 colors? how does the process work, different ways of working the plate, what is high viscosity? What is low viscosity ? Color viscosity demo separating colors & mixing colors. 12.30-16.00 hrs start plate work, demo different approaches.

He served as the Head of the Printmaking and Drawing Department at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO)2011-2023. Pettersson is internationally recognised for his expertise in color viscosity printmaking & multicolor copperplate photogravure. Trykkeriet was established in 2009 by professor Jan Pettersson & Asbjørn Hollerud.

Pettersson’s deep specialisation in color viscosity printing stems from a world-class training background & professional experience in having worked at numerous professional print studios in New York.

Studies:

• Grafikskolan FORUM: Studied in Malmö under the legendary Swedish printmaker Professor Bertil Lundberg.
• Atelier 17: Trained in Paris under Stanley William Hayter, the absolute pioneer who co-developed color viscosity printing.
• New York University (NYU): Studied under Professor Krishna Reddy, the master printmaker celebrated for revolutionizing simultaneous multi-color print production from a single plate.
